Bodywork for the Childbearing Cycle
Susanrachel Condon LMT, CCE, CNM &
Richard Condon CR, LMT

"Women are so incredibly strong. The things I learned from your class were so very helpful in preparing me to help my clients. .I just wanted you to know how vital the information you gave to me is. I treasure this knowledge, look forward to expanding on it, and using it to help women in need. Thank you for giving me confidence." ~ Student

This hands-on course emphasizes anatomy and the physiology of pregnancy, the use of bodywork as an appropriate adjunct to prenatal care, and using massage as a means of developing deeper kinesthetic awareness in preparation for labor and birth and postpartum recovery. Films are shown each day and numerous handouts are provided.

The first day begins with a review of systems through the lens of pregnancy physiology and structural change. Contraindications, benefits and goals of bodywork during pregnancy are discussed in detail. Participants will learn and practice setting up the massage table and draping the client appropriately with optimal bolstering for each trimester of pregnancy.

An overview of emotional milestones during the three trimesters of pregnancy and corresponding obstetrical care will be discussed in depth so participants will have a deeper understanding of the contemporary experience of pregnancy. Ethics and the role of the massage therapist will be discussed in this context.

The second day begins with distinguishing between common discomforts and concerns which require consultation with her midwife or physician. The focus of the morning is on structural assessment of the client, history taking and a detailed demonstration. Emphasis is given to working with areas of tension and myofascial restriction commonly associated with pregnancy. Each student will have the opportunity to practice with another student and will have two full hours of practice time with a pregnant volunteer.

The third day is essential to therapists working with pregnant women: It emphasizes the legacy of changes inherent in pregnancy, birth, cesarean surgery, and providing newborn care. Participants will learn about the physiological and psychological changes following both natural and surgical birth. Addressing these changes with active listening skills and bodywork are our focus. Swedish, deep tissue and Kinetic Myofascial Mobilization techniques will be demonstrated and practiced. In addition, postural assessment and teaching sound postpartum body mechanics are covered. Cesarean scar care and adhesion reduction is shown and practiced. Emotional and social adjustment issues are addressed, as participants may be in contact with the mother soon after birth. Giving a massage with a baby at the breast and/or on the table is demonstrated.

At the close of the day, marketing and networking in this specialty will be discussed in depth. Participants who complete the program will receive certification.

In Your Hands -
Susanrachel Condon LMT, CCE, CNM

This class sets the context for understanding recent trends in midwifery and obstetrics, complications of late pregnancy and the stages of labor, birth and postpartum. The in-depth lecture on the anatomy and physiology of labor/birth includes how sex and stress hormones impact and are impacted by the events in the woman’s internal and external environments.  Labor complications and appropriate interventions in home, birth center and hospital settings will be examined in detail. We explore being in labor and the experience of bearing witness to labor for various participants. The roles of various labor support companions and clinicians and common protocols will be clarified.  We will learn breathing, vocalization and chanting techniques, visualizations, positions for comfort and labor enhancement, and labor massage and shiatsu in various labor positions. Emphasis will be placed on good body mechanics. Videos will be shown and discussed. Numerous handouts will be given. This class meets the requirements for childbirth education classes under Doulas Of North America.

"The things I learned from your class were so very helpful in preparing me to help my client. I heard your voice talking me through each new step in the birthing process. The doctor and nurses said they were shocked this was my first time...and I credit that to you. There were no surprises and in fact everything went a million times smoother than I anticipated."  ~ Student

Critical Myofascial Strategies: The Lower Extremities, Pelvis and Sacrum

Richard Condon, L.M.T., C.R.

Participants will learn powerful myofascial release techniques, direct and indirect, and how to formulate precise, individual treatment strategies.  Assessment based on client movements, bony landmarks, tissue tension and component joint movements will be covered.   Component movements are small, involuntary movements, present in all synovial joints, which, when dysfunctional, cause restriction and pain. Indirect techniques use inherent joint motion to release capsular and ligamentous restrictions.

 December 1-2  2007 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

In Your Hands: Practical Massage Techniques for Clinical Midwifery Practice
Many midwives are seeking simple, time-honored, hands-on remedies for common conditions of pregnancy such as round ligament pain, abdominal pruritus, sciatica, and back labor. This workshop will cover numerous Eastern and Western bodywork and massage techniques that can either be performed or taught by the midwife during a prenatal visit or in labor. Indications for referral to a skilled practitioner will be made clear and appropriate styles of bodywork reviewed. Relevant anatomy will be discussed in depth, and the energetic and physiological basis for these techniques in current or classic literature addressed. Supervised practice sessions will enable participants to try each technique in a supportive environment.
At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize a variety of styles of bodywork that are appropriate during pregnancy.

  • Discuss the contraindications for massage therapy and bodywork during pregnancy.

  • Describe postural, gate, and pelvic stability issues related to pregnancy and how to alleviate discomfort related to these physiologic changes.

  • Teach clients how to perform prenatal perineal massage properly.

  • Use massage and exercise techniques to alleviate round ligament pain, abdominal pruritus, and encourage breech version.

  • Perform lymphatic drainage of the breast.

  • Identify, locate, and apply treatment with acupressure points for labor.

  • Ease back pain and encourage rotation of the persistent occipito-posterior fetus during labor.

  • Reduce the incidence of labor dystocia.

  • Prevent injury by using sound body mechanics.

  • Teach exercises for reducing diastasis recti.

  • Describe relief measures of pubic symphysis separation.
